Not long ago I saw a bizarre story on Archbishop Georg Gänswein’s description of the new communal nature of the Papacy since Pope Benedict’s resignation. Sorry, I'm not buying. See Thinking incorrectly about Pope Emeritus Benedict.

Even so, we are witnessing slow developments in ecclesiastical reform. See our news story: Pope sets new policy for removal of negligent bishops.

On the other hand, as Phil Lawler rightly notes: Another new policy, but we're still waiting for definitive Vatican action on negligent bishops. The disciplinary actions of a pope always have greater influence than his official texts.

Still, I am happy to see that Pope Francis has established the new congregation for laity, family, and life. Expect marriage, and its proper fruitfulness in the family, to be at the heart of this congregation’s work....
