As you probably know, there was considerable disappointment among Catholics with Pope Francis' address on a “new humanism” for Europe on the occasion of his being awarded the Charlemagne Prize for 2016.

His predecessors had consistently pointed out the need for a return to Christ for a true humanism to flourish, since Christ is the measure of what it means to be human. Pope Francis chose to take a less pointed approach.

Here is the address: I Dream of a Europe of which It Will Not Be Said that Its Commitment to Human Rights Was Its Last Utopia. The question is whether the Pope's three key ideas can be invested with moral substance without an explicit turn to grace.
