eNewsletter Subject: Curial Reform?

Some unconfirmed news about curial reform leaked out today. If true, it indicates progress on Pope Francis' part toward that goal: See Pope acknowledges 'gay lobby' influence in Vatican.

The headline indicates only the most sensational part of the story. If we are to judge by one of the most prominent themes in the Pope's homilies, Curial careerism is probably a bigger overall obstacle. See for example his recent address at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy: Leave Aside Personal Ambitions That Do Much Harm to the Church.

A more pressing story is the impending Irish vote to legalize abortion. The Irish bishops have exhorted lawmakers to reject the bill.

Earlier, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin called for a “free” vote, which was denied by Prime Minister Enda Kenny. See my explanation in Irish Politics, the Whip Hand, and Moral Courage....
