The Pope on Mary

The Pope arrived in Lebanon today as a “pilgrim of peace” in the wake of the attack on the US Consulate elsewhere in the Middle East (Benghazi, Libya).

Interestingly, after issuing a very weak statement on Wednesday which focused on the offense given to Muslims rather than on the murder of the diplomats in Benghazi, the Vatican Press Office issued a new statement yesterday roundly condemning the violence.

Several media outlets have reported that the new statement was made because the original was sharply criticized, but the only criticism we've seen mentioned was that of our own Phil Lawler writing on CatholicCulture.org. See An outrageous Vatican reaction to the deaths in Benghazi.

In another sort of violence, the HHS mandate is still going forward in the United States, requiring insurance coverage for contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs.
