Effective Catholic Social Teaching

At the last Fellowship of Catholic Scholars convention, Gerard V. Bradley of Notre Dame gave a brilliant exposition of how bishops can deliver truly effective social teaching. His guidelines are so impressive that I've summarized them for you in my latest In Depth Analysis: Rules for Good Catholic Social Teaching.

This is in sharp contrast to what happens when the bishops (or anyone else) can be faulted for doing what Phil Lawler calls Climbing aboard with Nuns on the Bus.

Both Dr. Bradley and Phil have noticed, of course, that the American bishops are in the midst of perhaps their greatest task of Catholic social teaching, defending religious liberty. This is a real battle. Watch out, Phil says, for Obama's 'September surprise' for American Catholics.
