11/03/2009 - Reforming the Campaign for Human Development

There is credible effort underway to get the U.S. bishops to reform their Catholic Campaign for Human Development. For at least twenty years, concerned Catholics have complained that the CCHD routinely provides funding for community-organization groups which also support such things as abortion and same-sex marriage.

This is not the first effort at reform, but there is a reasonable hope that this one will have legs. The bishops were badly embarrassed over ACORN funding when ACORN's activities blew up in Congress. Also, many individual bishops and the USCCB as a whole have become increasingly militant in defending the full range of Catholic social teaching over the past few years....
